Shirley Nair and The Silver Strings!

During Singapore's band craze of the 60s, "super bands" sprouted, featuring tie-ups of popular bands with well-known vocalists. For instance, besides recording on their own, The Thunderbirds also backed several vocalists in their recording career - Heather, Alan & Doug Lyford, and even Susan Lim (of The Crescendos)! The Quests is another example that springs easily to mind. I'm sure these attractive combinations worked well for the record-buying public!

This release features vocalist Shirley Nair, backed by The Silver Strings. Prior to joining The Quests, Vernon Cornelius was once a vocalist with the Silver Strings, though this line-up did not release any recordings.

Where is Shirley Nair today? I think she is one of the very best to come out from the Far East?

maria: shirley was one of the many talented singers from Singapore in the 1960s. i wouldn't like to define one as "the best" cos that's subjective isn't it? =) i don't think she released many records. my personal favourite female singer from that era is Rita Chao.

miss pedantic: hi! glad you like my site. =)

When doing an internet search about Shirley Nair several months ago, I came across a site that referred to her as "the late Shirley Nair." Sorry

I have the Philips 45" YOU'RE THE BOY in my vinyl collection, and I've recently transferred it to digital. It's one of the few records I have that contains all-original material. The musical style and lyrics have JOE MEEK writen all over them, and that's a wonderful thing...

Oops! I meant to add that I could not find any additional information to confirm or deny the quip about "the late Shirley Nair"

Whatever happened to Shirley? Is she still around? Was my favourite back in the '60s when I was in Malaya as it was then known. Was to have visited Singapore and had planned to see her perform but I missed Singapore and ended up in Liverpool England. And Liverpool was the place to be in the mid-'60s. Am sorry never saw perform live ever. She would have made it in England. And now I'm growing old in Perth,Australia.
