Because I rediscovered my old Lovin' Spoonful cd! This used to be my absolute favourite cd some years ago, because every song on it is immediately likeable - pop with a folk-flavoured twist. The liner notes of this cd reads: "The Lovin' Spoonful is the most underrated group of the 1960s. John Sebastian's songs were up to the standards of the Beatles' but who mentions him in the same breath?" Possibly because to some The Lovin' Spoonful's songs might be too 'lightweight' and 'happy'. But I think that's what pop music is all about.

Unfortunately, The Lovin' Spoonful do seem to be underrated compared to many of their contemporaries from the 60s.
I like the bittersweet nature of this song. Thanks for posting.
